Eleven people have been confirmed dead and five others injured following a tragic road crash at Amanase on the Accra-Kumasi highway, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported.
The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, 2025, involved a head-on collision between a DAF XF trailer (GR 1300-16) heading toward Accra and a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus (GW 6510-23) traveling in the opposite direction toward Kumasi. Eyewitnesses claim the trailer swerved off its lane and crashed into the bus.
Responding to a distress call at 5:49 a.m., a rescue team from the Suhum Municipal Fire Command, led by STNO II Prince Ofobi, rushed to the scene. Firefighters immediately began extrication operations, rescuing three trapped individuals and handing them over to paramedics from the Ambulance Service.
Sadly, six people were found unresponsive in the wreckage and were turned over to the Ghana Police Service. The crash left 16 people injured or deceased in total — comprising six females and eight males. The 11 confirmed fatalities include two women and nine men.
The Sprinter bus was mangled beyond recognition, while the trailer sustained significant damage to its front.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, GNFS has renewed calls for road users to exercise caution, adhere to safety protocols, and stay vigilant while on highways to help prevent further loss of lives.
