A fire outbreak on Monday evening at the Kwadaso Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Ashanti Region has left several students displaced.
The blaze gutted one of the hostels, destroying 15 rooms along with students' belongings and study materials.
Students say the fire originated in one of the rooms and spread quickly after early efforts to control it failed. It took firefighters several hours to bring the situation under control, by which time extensive damage had been done.
An eyewitness noted that the timely arrival of the fire service helped prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes.
"The fire service succeeded in preventing the spread of the fire to different houses in the vicinity," the eyewitness said.
Students say personal belongings and study materials were lost to the inferno. While the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be confirmed, some students suspect it may be linked to the area’s recurring power fluctuations.
Meanwhile, officials from the fire service have launched an investigation to determine what sparked the incident.
This is not the first time a fire incident has been recorded in the school. About three days before the occurrence of the aforementioned fire, another fire occurred on April 18, destroying 15 rooms in the same college.
There have been several cases whose cause have been attributed to power outages, illegal connections by students among others.
A case in point is the fire case at Accra Academy 2023. Though the particular cause of the fire has not been found, there have been suggestions of possible negligence or improper monitoring of student activities, such as the use of naked flames or unauthorized cooking.
St. Charles Minor Seminary Senior High School: The fire incidents here also lack definitive causes.
Investigations have pointed to the absence of fire safety measures, such as extinguishers, and the possibility of electrical faults.
Also,in 2024, a fire gutted a dormitory at St. Charles Minor Seminary Senior High School, leaving many students displaced and destroying their belongings.
