The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, shared that 71 individuals involved in illegal mining have been apprehended.
He also revealed that over 150 pieces of equipment, including excavators, vehicles, and firearms, have been confiscated as part of the government's ongoing efforts to combat galamsey.
He made this announcement at an event held on May 5 to mark World Press Freedom Day, organized by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra. Addressing diplomats, journalists, and other participants, Kwakye Ofosu emphasized the government's unyielding commitment to tackling the menace of illegal mining.
“The latest report we received indicates that 71 illegal miners have been arrested, and more than 150 excavators, bulldozers, vehicles, and firearms have been seized. We are working hard to ensure that L.I. 2462 is fully revoked,” he stated.
Kwakye Ofosu also mentioned that on March 20, Ibrahim Murtala, the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, introduced Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 in Parliament, which permits mining in forest reserves. However, the government now plans to completely repeal the regulation when Parliament reconvenes, having initially considered an amendment.
Additionally, the Minister reassured the public that the government will review and strengthen existing mining laws as part of a comprehensive strategy to eradicate illegal mining.
