In Abenase, a community in the Ejisu Municipality, women and children had long endured the hardship of rising early to walk long distances in search of water.
Their days often began with queuing at streams or boreholes, only to carry heavy containers home under intense heat.
That exhausting routine is now being replaced by a more hopeful scene—running taps flowing within households.
Although Ghana has made strides in expanding water access, remote communities like Abenase were often left behind. That is now beginning to shift.
Through new efforts by local leaders, water systems are being expanded and piped directly to homes, bringing not just relief but also improvements in health and living conditions.
The change aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Six, which pledges to provide safe and affordable water to all by 2030. But to residents here, the transformation is deeply personal.
“We no longer waste time walking miles just to fetch water. Our children can go to school on time, and we have more hours to work and take care of our families,” said Abena Nyarko, a lifelong resident.
“The water is clean, and our children are healthier. This is the kind of development we’ve been praying for,” added Mary Owusu, another resident benefiting from the project.
The water initiative took root when Abenase’s Chief, Nana Dr Akuoko Boateng, began addressing the problem by commissioning new boreholes. Assemblyman Adom Saahene, together with the local unit committee, later secured more resources to bring the service into individual homes.
“Our goal is to reach at least 80% of the 17,000 residents by the end of 2025. This is just the beginning—we want every home in Abenase to have reliable water access,” Saahene stated.
As these changes take hold, residents are already seeing how access to water is reshaping their lives—boosting health, saving time, and creating new opportunities for growth.
