Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer for former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has criticised the Attorney General over his client’s recent remand into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Abuakwa South MP described the decision as an act of revenge, suggesting it was linked to a defamation lawsuit filed against the Attorney General by his client. He called the move a “tit for tat.”
“I believe this is a tit for tat because some people now believe the Samuel Atta Akyea has criticised the Attorney General's approach in the ongoing case involving his client, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, saying, “The Attorney General is licensed to defend people, and then we sing the Hallelujah chorus for him afterwards.”
His remarks came after the Accra High Court, on Friday, May 2, 2025, ordered that Kwabena Adu-Boahene be remanded into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The decision was to allow the Attorney General’s office more time to complete witness statements.
The case has been postponed to May 13, when the court is expected to give further directions.
Despite this, Samuel Atta Akyea accused the prosecution of intentionally delaying the proceedings and acting in bad faith.
“Do you expect someone to glorify you for defaming them? He even mentioned it at his press conference that Adu-Boahene has sued him and yet he continued to defame him,” he said.
Embattled Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, on April 24, 2025, filed a defamation suit against the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
According to the plaintiffs, Dr. Ayine fabricated a false narrative alleging that they had fraudulently used a corporate account to siphon state funds for personal use.
They are seeking exemplary and punitive damages for what they describe as highly offensive and defamatory statements made by the Attorney General during a press conference held on March 24, 2025.
In addition to damages, the plaintiffs are requesting a perpetual injunction to restrain Dr. Ayine from making or facilitating any further publication or broadcast of similar defamatory content.
Following the suit, Dr. Ayine formally charged the couple with corruption-related offences amounting to several millions of cedis.
Alongside two others – Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited – they face 11 counts, including stealing, money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, and wilfully causing financial loss.
Meanwhile, Mr. Atta Akyea has said Dr. Ayine is yet to enter an appearance in the defamation suit although the timeline has elapsed.
“The time is moving and I will advise myself accordingly,” he added.
