The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is actively overseeing the 21-day deadline it set for all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, urging them to remove unauthorised billboards from road medians and highways.
The NRSA’s Managing Director, Abraham Amaliba, revealed that 29 MMDAs have already received official compliance notices, which direct them to take down billboards that could endanger pedestrian safety or serve as distractions to drivers.
“I have written compliance notices to 29 municipal and district assemblies in Greater Accra. They have the responsibility of granting licenses to the advertising companies and also erecting the billboards—to remove them,” Amaliba said during his appearance on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 30, 2024.
He further stressed that legal action will be pursued against any assembly that does not comply within the 21-day window.
“Within 21 days, and we are counting, if they don’t, we will have to enforce the law by suing them in court for the court to come in and deal with them,” he stated.
Amaliba explained that the directive is part of broader efforts aimed at improving road safety and pedestrian protection in Accra, in response to public concerns about billboards that obstruct visibility and distract motorists, particularly near footbridges designed to ensure pedestrian safety.
