The former Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has suggested that the current Auditor General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, should begin issuing monthly updates that list public officials who have fulfilled their asset declaration obligations.
This proposal comes in the wake of government denials regarding claims that a number of former officials under the Mahama administration failed to file their declarations by the March 31 deadline. Reports had indicated that nine out of 55 ministers and deputies had not complied, a situation that sparked concerns about transparency and legal adherence. The government, however, has rejected these allegations, criticizing the media for spreading misinformation.
Speaking to Citi News, Domelevo maintained that releasing such a list would not breach any legal boundaries and could serve as a tool to strengthen transparency and foster a culture of accountability. He remarked, “There is nothing wrong with the Auditor General updating us month by month on the assets of public officials. No law prohibits that. He is not going to disclose the content of what has been declared to him, but he should publish every month. That is going to be fantastic.”
He also underscored the importance of adhering to the constitutional directive that asset declarations be completed before appointees assume office, expressing hope that the President would take the issue seriously. “Given that the constitution says that the declaration should precede the taking of office, I will wish that the president takes a cue from the misbehaviour of his appointees,” Domelevo added.
