Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has announced a joint investigation into a recent cybersecurity incident reported by MTN Ghana, which may have compromised the personal data of thousands of subscribers.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, it confirmed that it is collaborating with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to ascertain the full scope of the breach and determine if the Mobile Network Operator (MNO) failed in its data protection obligations.
“This collaboration aims to determine the extent of the breach and ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect customer data,” the Ministry said. “The Ministry will ensure that affected customers are contacted in line with Data Protection Laws.”
The Ministry also urged the public to stay calm while the investigation unfolds. “We are working to establish if there are any breaches on the part of the Mobile Network Operator,” it noted.
“The Ministry urges all customers to remain calm as we work together to resolve the issue and keep the public updated.”
MTN Group, in a statement dated April 28, confirmed that it had detected a security incident that may have affected the data of approximately 5,700 subscribers in Ghana. Although the exact details are still being established, the company stressed that its platforms remain operational.
“The confidentiality, integrity and availability of our systems remain central to how we operate and serve our customers,” MTN assured in its release.
To address the breach, MTN has engaged top-tier cybersecurity professionals to conduct a forensic review of its systems.
“We are working closely with leading cybersecurity experts and are conducting a forensic investigation to assess any impact to our environment in line with our established security protocols,” the company stated.
MTN also committed to reaching out directly to those affected and advised customers to remain vigilant against potential scams. “We understand that this incident may raise concerns,” the company said. “We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully.”
As a precaution, MTN is encouraging customers to adopt best cybersecurity practices—such as updating apps, using strong passwords, and avoiding suspicious links or messages.
Users are also reminded not to disclose personal security details like PINs, passwords, or OTPs, and to activate multi-factor authentication when available. In the event of any suspected fraud, customers are advised to notify credit bureaus and contact MTN’s toll-free number 100 for support.
