Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has opened up about her struggles with cyberbullying and its impact on her mental health.
Speaking in a heartfelt interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo on his Live Talk show, Akindele revealed how hurtful comments on social media deeply affected her, even though many people see her as a strong public figure.
She shared that losing her mother, facing political backlash, and being mocked over her failed marriage all contributed to her emotional breakdown.
Although she has always tried to stay strong during tough times, Akindele admitted that constantly being judged online became overwhelming.
“I was dying in silence because I was acting strong,” she said. “Every time I showed strength, they threw more at me—at home, from family, at work, in society. You’re the role model for a lot of people out there.”But she was reluctant to seek therapy although she believed it could heal her mentally – —fearing judgment or being misunderstood.
“I thought people would talk about me. People would know my business,” she confessed.
However, she took a bold decision to seek therapy after she broke down in tears after seeing a video that made fun of her lack of a husband.“I cried and cried and cried. Then I told myself, you need to speak to someone about this. You can’t continue like this,” she shared. She began to regain her emotional stability after she begun seeing her therapist.
“When I started speaking to a therapist, I felt better…Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better. She said, emphasizing the importance of mental health support. “It’s very important for you to speak up. Yes.”
