Founder of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has commended former President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising Ghana’s interest over personal gain in a foreign investment deal.
Speaking at a recent gathering, the respected clergyman narrated how Mahama, during his tenure, turned down a business arrangement that would have seen him benefit personally at the expense of the nation.
“It’s not because I know this president, but I am telling you that he means well for this country,” Duncan-Williams said.
He recounted an encounter with some business tycoons who spoke highly of the former president’s integrity. According to him, a foreign company that was interested in doing business in Ghana had proposed a deal in which ownership of the investment would be shared among certain Ghanaian stakeholders, foreign investors, and then-President Mahama.
However, Duncan-Williams revealed that Mahama outrightly rejected the proposal, instructing that the investment be structured in favour of the nation.
“The man said the president rejected the offer, saying that it should go to Ghana instead. He told them to structure the deal in a way that after the debt was paid, let the investment be owned by Ghana,” he stated.
The Archbishop indicated that this was not the only time he had heard about Mahama’s stance on such matters, stressing that similar accounts of the former president’s commitment to national interest had reached him on more than one occasion.
Duncan-Williams' comments come at a time when conversations around leadership integrity and patriotism continue to stir public debate in the country.
