The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the University of Ghana's (UG) Governing Council in Accra on Friday, April 25.
This newly formed council, consisting of 18 members and led by Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, is tasked with overseeing key policies related to the university's academic and infrastructure progress.
In his speech, Iddrisu revealed that the government is set to activate the National Research Fund, with an initial GHC50 million allocated for its launch.
This fund aims to support universities in driving research that fosters national development.
Iddrisu also emphasized the necessity for the University of Ghana to form strategic public-private partnerships to enhance both academic and residential infrastructures, ensuring the university can cater to its expanding student base.
“The president has asked me to convince you that this year, he intends to operationalise the National Research Fund, and accordingly, an amount of GHC50 million has been allocated for the take-off of the National Research Fund.
“And then also your affiliate institutions, but more importantly, again, that today the university must sail through an appropriate, legitimate public-private partnership to expand your infrastructure both academic and residential in order that you can go and improve the student population,” he said.
