Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has thrown his weight behind calls for the release of controversial social media activist Verydarkman, who was recently arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a post shared on his social media pages, Davido applauded the wave of support rising for the detained activist and highlighted the importance of standing up for those who fight for the public good.
“Outside all the noise, it’s good to see that the good one does actually impacts lives and Pple actually appreciate! The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging.. makes one want to do more for the masses ❤️ FREE MY GUY,” he wrote.
Verydarkman, known for his bold commentaries and criticism of powerful institutions, was reportedly arrested on May 2, 2025, in Abuja after visiting a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch to address issues related to suspicious withdrawals from his mother’s account.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, claimed the activist was picked up by men in black uniforms outside the bank, beaten, blindfolded, and detained without being formally charged.
While the EFCC has confirmed his arrest, its spokesperson Dele Oyewale simply stated that there are petitions being investigated against him, offering no further details.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing the authorities of using intimidation tactics to silence dissenting voices. Davido’s public stance has further amplified the debate, as fans and civil society groups continue to demand transparency and justice in the case.
As of now, the EFCC has not disclosed the specific allegations against Verydarkman, and calls for his immediate release continue to grow across social media platforms.
