On Sunday, April 20, a group of youth from Sabon Zongo in Accra initiated a significant operation, resulting in the closure of over 20 shops and the confiscation of several sacks filled with illegal substances, including weed, codeine, and Tramadol.
The operation targeted establishments and drug dens suspected of being involved in the sale of illicit drugs. The growing concern over drug abuse, especially among youth, teenagers, and even children in the area, prompted the youth to take matters into their own hands, with approval from local authorities and the Chief Imam.
Speaking to Citi News, Mohammed Hashiru, Deputy Spokesperson for the No Drugs in Zongo Movement, explained that this was just the first step in a series of planned actions.
“We have scattered all the blockers, and we will come back again. Now, we do not have any police here, but we have conquered them because we are the majority,” Hashiru said.
He went on to state, “Next time, when we come back with the reinforcement, if we catch anyone misbehaving, the person will be handed over to the police, and the next step will be to take him to court for prosecution.”
