Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to deepening regional cooperation as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, speaking on behalf of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to ECOWAS’ foundational principles at the opening of a special ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Accra on Monday.
“As we celebrate 50 years of ECOWAS, we must look ahead with a renewed sense of purpose and unity,” he said. “Ghana remains firmly committed to the ideals of regional integration, peace, and shared development.”
Held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the two-day gathering marks the beginning of a year-long celebration highlighting ECOWAS’ five-decade journey of fostering regional unity and economic advancement.
Hon. Ampem highlighted the achievements of the bloc in promoting political stability and economic cooperation, urging member states to remain focused and work collectively to overcome the region’s persistent economic challenges.
He praised ECOWAS’ track record of resilience and progress, calling on countries to strengthen existing partnerships and elevate collaboration to meet the evolving expectations of the West African people.
Hon. Ampem lauded the organization’s resilience and leadership over the years, noting its pivotal role in fostering economic and political stability. He urged member countries to build on this legacy and intensify efforts to meet the aspirations of the region’s people.
