Popular Nigerian actress, Ekene Umenma, has disclosed that she was made to choose between fame and her faith by some exclusive group of people within Nollywood in the early days of her acting career.
In an Instagram video shared by the actress while dancing to Gaise Baba and Lawrence Oyor's new song titled "No Turning Back", she recounted the situation and made a mockery of it without mentioning names.
"When I came to Nollywood many years ago with my Jesus, I was told by some folks to drop Jesus & Mary to move with the flow so that I can make it. They said, Ekene, this game no be Jesus Jesus oo."
However, she maintained that she stood firm and trusted in the faithfulness of God to establish her in the industry regardless.
“I was like chimo, is that so? Never. I ran to my father, and Jesus told me to move, ahead ahead. I thank God today that many people have joined me to proclaim Jesus in Nollywood,” the actress stated.
Ekene Umenwa is also a content creator, entrepreneur, comedian, and event planner. She rose to prominence following her role in the 2013 film Black Choir.
She disclosed in an interview that she never thought of becoming an actress. However, at 13, she had a vision where God was calling her to act with a mission to save souls.
Ekene has been featured in several Nollywood movies and TV series, notably Money and Blood, Innocent Oath, and The Cab Ladies. The actress has been in the entertainment industry since 2011.
In her acting career, she has starred alongside notable Nollywood actors such as Destiny Etiko, Zubby Michael, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Ola Daniels, and Maleek Mitton. She has gained immense popularity on social media, especially on TikTok, where she shares her comic skits.
She currently manages a YouTube channel mainly for sharing movies and funny short skits.
The channel was created on 3 October 2016 and currently has 550 thousand subscribers.
Some of the films she has published on the channel include Set Me Free, One Day Principle, Crazy Daughter, Something More Than Gold, and Baby Nanny.
