The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno has officially been petitioned by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to investigate an alleged assault by a police officer during the just ended “Save the Judiciary” protest.
In the petition, Mr. Afenyo-Markin identified the officer involved as Constable Forson, described as “a tall, fair, and heavily built officer” who was stationed at the entrance of Parliament House to provide security during the protest.
He alleges that the officer physically assaulted him at the parliamentary gate, an incident he says must be met with swift disciplinary measures.
The gravity of the accusation, especially in the context of a high-profile protest attended by senior public officials, has raised concerns. Mr. Afenyo-Markin, detailing the incident in his letter, stated unequivocally, “Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration.”
In a move to clarify what he calls “misleading narratives circulating in the public domain,” the Minority Leader has also released a public statement outlining his account of the event.
“To address this incident and to correct misleading narratives… I have issued a public statement detailing the events as they occurred,” he wrote in the petition.
The statement, appended to the letter, is expected to provide additional context and guide any subsequent investigation or disciplinary process.
