King of Mamprugu, His Royal Majesty Na Bohaga Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, has urged the government to boost the number of security personnel and provide adequate logistics to restore calm in the troubled Bawku Traditional Area.
Raising the alarm over persistent violence and rising insecurity in the area, the Nayiri made a passionate appeal during a press conference held at his palace in Nalerigu.
He called for immediate and decisive action to halt armed attacks, protect lives, and safeguard the economic lifeline of communities along the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Poulimakom corridor.
“Increase security personnel and logistics. Address concerns raised by the police and military command in Bawku regarding insufficient manpower and logistics by deploying the required number of personnel to maintain law and order,” he said.
“Though costly, this measure is far more prudent than bearing the price of insecurity,” he added.
The Nayiri’s remarks follow recent deadly clashes between Kusasi youth and the Ghana Police Service, which have resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injuries to others, including an immigration officer. The violent outburst reportedly stemmed from allegations of police bias—specifically, claims that officers supported women traders in a Kusasi market.
On April 9, the situation escalated dramatically when a Kusasi youth leader died during a protest. The aftermath saw angry youth vandalising police installations, torching the police barracks, and setting fire to the homes of both the Bawku Divisional Police Commander and a CID officer. Police stations in Pusiga and Binduri were also attacked.
The unrest has also endangered senior security officials. During a reconciliatory visit to Bawku, the vehicle of the Inspector General of Police was severely damaged in an ambush by armed assailants.
The Mamprugu king condemned the wave of violence and expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen officers. He called for justice, unity, and firm national leadership to restore peace.
“May divine wisdom continue to guide His Excellency in his leadership of this Republic and in his noble endeavour to foster unity and peace within our cherished nation,” the Nayiri stated.
He further proposed several actions to help stabilise the region:
“Empower security forces. Ensure that security forces operate without undue political interference, enabling them to pursue and apprehend criminal elements disrupting the peace.”
The king also underscored the importance of protecting economic freedoms in the region.
“Guarantee that no trader, especially innocent women and children, including those from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Togo, are hindered from conducting business in their jewellery markets.”
He expressed deep concern about an economic blockade allegedly imposed by armed groups, which he described as “totally unacceptable.” The Nayiri urged the government to ensure that the free movement of people, goods, and services along key highways is not disrupted.
While demanding accountability and action from state authorities, the Mamprugu overlord also advised his people to remain law-abiding.
“In this difficult moment,” he said, “exercise restraint, uphold the values of peace, and remain law-abiding, as efforts to seek lasting resolutions and relief are actively underway.”
