Former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has responded to a critical need at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) by donating a number of wheelchairs to support healthcare delivery.
His intervention comes in the wake of reports of a shortage of essential medical equipment at the facility, which surfaced during a visit to a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who had been hospitalized after a stabbing incident.
According to Mr Agyapong, he "initially planned to donate beds, but due to supply challenges in Kumasi, I consulted with hospital management. They advised that wheelchairs would be just as essential in improving patient mobility and care."
The student, believed to be a supporter of Agyapong, was injured during a chaotic scene that unfolded at the Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Region as part of the NPP’s "Thank You Tour" following its flagbearer elections.
According to eyewitness accounts, the violence erupted when a group of KNUST students attempted to prevent armed individuals—suspected to be party vigilantes—from making away with cash donations offered after the event. The confrontation escalated, with eight warning shots reportedly fired into the air before one of the students was stabbed in the upper right rib.
The victim was rushed to KATH, where doctors confirmed that he underwent minor surgery and was in stable condition.
