Kylian Mbappe has won the European Golden Shoe award after his brace in Real Madrid's 2-0 win against Real Sociedad on Saturday, May 24.
Mbappe is now the third Real player to win the award, after Hugo Sanchez (1989-90) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010-11, 2013-14 and 2014-15).
The European Golden Shoe is awarded to the top goalscorer in Europe's domestic leagues each season.
Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres (39 goals) and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah (29 goals) contested against Kylian (31 goals), but the French prodigy bagged it, despite Gyokeres leading by 8 goals. The Madridistas beat the Sportinguista after his brace in the last game.
Winning the European Golden Shoe takes more than just scoring goals, but also due to the weighted system, which ensures that goals scored in stronger leagues carry more weight than those in weaker leagues.
Goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1) are multiplied by 2.
Goals scored in leagues ranked 6 to 22 (such as Portugal’s Primeira Liga) are multiplied by 1.5.
Goals scored in leagues ranked below 22 are multiplied by 1.
Hence, Mbappe's 31 goals earned him 62 points, which made him a forerunner over Gyokeres.
Gyokeres—who has been heavily linked with a summer move to Arsenal—had no chance of catching Mbappe because Sporting’s league campaign ended the previous weekend.
After scoring in his side’s 3-1 defeat of Lisbon rivals Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final on Sunday, the Sweden international finished the season with 53 goals in 51 games in all competitions.
This system is mostly slammed by some fans that it prevents players from weaker leagues from winning the award.
Liverpool's Egyptian King, on the other hand, needed a hat trick in Liverpool’s final Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday in order to share the prize with Mbappe. However, he scored only once in a 1-1 draw.
The top five in the rankings were as follows: Mbappe (62 points), Gyokeres (58.5), Salah (58), Robert Lewandowski (54), and Harry Kane (52).
