Mobile Money Limited is intensifying its crackdown on digital fraud by deploying tools that are successfully intercepting hundreds of thousands of scam messages daily.
This was revealed by Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Godwin Tamakloe, during an appearance on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, May 2.
Tamakloe explained that the company has rolled out sophisticated filters that screen incoming SMS messages and block those flagged as suspicious. He noted that these filters operate based on pre-set criteria designed to detect specific phrases commonly used in scam messages.
According to him, “The attack channels are an SMS, a link, or a call. So the system blocks the SMS because of certain words in the SMS. We can block over 400,000 SMS in a day that should have gone to customers for them to now call up and defraud.”
Amid public speculation about internal involvement in some fraud incidents, Mr Tamakloe pushed back, stressing that mobile money agents and employees are not in a position to access customers’ confidential information, such as PIN codes.
He described these assumptions as unfounded and reaffirmed the integrity of the system’s personnel.
With many scam victims turning to social media to share their experiences, Tamakloe encouraged users to be forthcoming with detailed accounts of how they were defrauded.
He emphasized that accurate reporting plays a crucial role in tracing scam operations and preventing recurrence.
