The 2024 Vice-Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that he is currently under investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Speaking to the media yesterday, June 4, the former Manhyia-South Member of Parliament revealed that he had been invited about twice to the NIB headquarters to answer questions relating to his four-year role as Education Minister from 2017-2021.
"As I speak to you now, I have been invited by the NIB on two different occasions to answer some questions from my time as Education Minister—some issues I don’t even remember. But the records are there to show," he noted.
His remarks follow rising cases of former government officials of the erstwhile government being investigated for possible corruption and corruption-related activities.
President John Dramani Mahama's administration has launched an anti-corruption initiative aimed at scrutinising the works of former officials.
The government has charged state investigative and intelligence agencies, such as EOCO and the NIB, to investigate suspected malfeasance during the tenure of the previous government.
A very recent case of investigation involved the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over allegations of corruption, money laundering, and illegal mining.
National Security operatives, along with police, raided the residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on May 23.
It is alleged that they acted on the authority of a search warrant.
Chairman Wontumi voluntarily appeared before the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for interrogation and was held for several hours before being released.
However, upon his return, he was immediately arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in connection with investigations into alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
He remained in custody for 6 days as he struggled to meet his bail terms; however, on Monday, June 2, he was released.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has already announced that the Attorney-General is preparing to prosecute 33 cases of corruption and related offences.
These cases were derived from findings by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team, a special task force established following Mahama’s return to power in 2024.
