The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has responded to circulating rumors that Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), was attacked during his recent trip to Bawku in the Upper East Region.
The military categorically denied these claims, describing the videos circulating online as misleading.
In an official statement released on Thursday, April 25, GAF stated, “These false claims should be treated with the contempt that they deserve.” The military confirmed that Major General Gbetanu's visit to Bawku on Wednesday, April 23, was part of a planned operational tour, and there were no disturbances. “COAS’ operational visit to Bawku on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, was successful and no negative incident was recorded,” the statement assured.
Additionally, GAF announced that investigations are underway to locate the individuals responsible for the false videos and take appropriate legal action. “Efforts are, however, underway to track the originators of the videos in question to face the law as appropriate,” the statement read.
In response to the spread of false information, GAF issued a stern warning to media personnel, bloggers, and content creators, urging them to verify the information before sharing it. “GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations, especially in Bawku,” the statement emphasized.
The Ghana Armed Forces also expressed concern that these false reports could exacerbate the already delicate security situation in Bawku. GAF urged all involved parties to work together to promote peace and stability in the region, stating, “GAF urges all stakeholders to put their hands on deck to help restore normalcy to Bawku and its environs.”
This clarification highlights GAF's efforts to maintain peace and accurate reporting while addressing false information that could disrupt the region's stability.
