The Supreme Court has unanimously rejected an objection raised against acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s involvement in a high-profile case concerning the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The objection, filed by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, questioned the propriety of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie both empanelling and chairing a case in which the suspended Chief Justice is a central figure. He argued that such dual responsibility could erode public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality.
Describing the situation as "unprecedented," Mr Dame contended that the acting Chief Justice’s participation in the matter raised procedural concerns that could compromise the integrity of the proceedings.
After a short adjournment, the panel returned with a unanimous ruling dismissing the objection. The justices affirmed that there was no legal basis to exclude Justice Baffoe-Bonnie from presiding, stating that judicial standards and fairness would be maintained throughout the case.
The current panel comprises Justices Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Yonny Kulendi, Amadu Tanko, and Ernest Gaewu.
