The dismissal of Asante Kotoko head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has stirred up major discussions within Ghanaian football circles.
In an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, the club’s Communications Manager, Samuel Sarfo Duku Esq., explained the decision, calling it “tough but necessary.”
Kotoko, who were once at the top of the Ghana Premier League, have dropped to fourth place, now six points behind current leaders Bibiani Goldstars.
Although many believe the gap can still be closed, Duku said the decision to part ways with Ogum wasn’t based on league position alone.
“We were once leading the table, even tied with second place at a point, but the trend has been worrying,” Duku emphasized.“We started poorly, improved briefly, and now we’re declining again. What do you expect?”
He acknowledged that the coach is highly skilled.“There’s no debate about his competence—he remains one of the best in the country,” he admitted.
However, Duku added that results are what matter most in football.“In football, when things don’t go well over time, changes at the top become inevitable.”
He also pointed out that Ogum had full control over player signings and that management had fulfilled its part.“If the team’s performance is faltering, the technical team bears that responsibility.”
Even though Ogum put in a lot of effort, Duku said, “his best wasn’t enough to meet expectations,” which left the club with no choice but to move in a new direction.
Reports suggest that former Kotoko player and experienced coach Karim Zito is being considered to take over, with an official announcement expected soon.
