President John Dramani Mahama is set to launch the "Adwumawura Programme" today, Monday, April 28, at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, aimed at creating sustainable jobs for young people.
He will be joined by Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo and other government officials.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Mr George Opare Addo, noted that the programme was testament to government’s “promises to create decent and sustainable jobs for young people.”
The Adwumawura Programme falls under the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and will be implemented by the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (NEIP).
Mr Opare Addo urged young people to take advantage of the programme, emphasizing that it is designed for them to help build the Ghana that is of a large population made up of unemployed youth.
Ghana is facing a significant youth unemployment challenge, with recent data indicating that approximately 1.9 million young individuals are not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET) .
The overall unemployment rate stood at 14.7% in the first three quarters of 2023, highlighting the urgent need for effective interventions .
In response to this pressing issue, President John Dramani Mahama, in his 2025 State of the Nation Address, emphasized that youth unemployment is Ghana's most critical challenge, posing a serious national security threat .
He pledged to address this through comprehensive strategies aimed at creating decent and well-paying jobs for the youth, with the "Adwumawura Programme" being one of them.
Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has reiterated the government's commitment to tackling youth unemployment.
In several interactions with the media, he stated, "Our focus and mandate is to create employment opportunities in the country and to bring an end to unemployment, which has become a national security threat."
He further emphasized the need for aggressive and transformative policies to empower the youth and lift them out of poverty .
In addition to the Adwumawura Programme, the government has outlined other initiatives, such as the "One Million Coders Programme," which aims to equip young people with digital skills, including coding, web app development, and digital marketing, to enhance their employability in the digital economy .
These concerted efforts reflect the government's dedication to addressing the youth unemployment crisis and fostering an environment where young Ghanaians can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the nation's development.
