Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II returned to Ghana on April 23 to a hero’s welcome, marking his arrival with a warm reception from traditional leaders, dignitaries, and notable figures including former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh.
With his return, the revered monarch is poised to recommence his mediation efforts aimed at bringing lasting peace to the Bawku area, which has been plagued by recurring tensions.
According to the Manhyia Palace, the next round of peace talks is scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 1 at the palace in Kumasi. The sessions will bring together representatives from both sides of the conflict.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 15, the Manhyia Palace reiterated the Asantehene’s call for collective cooperation in resolving the crisis.
The renewed mediation comes amid recent escalations in Bawku, where confrontations between youth and security forces have led to casualties, injuries, and the destruction of property. Among the affected is the private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga.
President John Dramani Mahama has thrown his weight behind the initiative. Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy on April 11, he highlighted the national importance of Otumfuo’s role in fostering dialogue.
Otumfuo’s mediation is widely regarded as a critical step in addressing the longstanding chieftaincy-related tensions in Bawku, with many hoping his respected leadership can guide the region toward lasting reconciliation.
