The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of four individuals in connection with the kidnapping of three Chinese nationals from a Ghanaian vessel.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, CID Director-General, DCOP Lydia Ayaako Donkor, disclosed that the three victims—a Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer—were reported missing following a pirate attack on the Ghanaian vessel Mengxin 1.
The incident occurred in Ghanaian territorial waters on the evening of Thursday, March 27, 2025, at around 5:53 PM, when seven armed assailants stormed the vessel and fired warning shots before abducting the crew members.
DCOP Donkor revealed that the victims were later transported across the border and abandoned in a remote area in Nigeria.
Their eventual rescue and the arrest of the suspects were made possible through close collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and partner security agencies.
She further indicated that investigations remain ongoing, with Ghanaian and Nigerian authorities working together to apprehend additional suspects and dismantle the broader criminal network behind the kidnapping.
