Former Attorney-General Godfred Dame has criticized Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine’s press conference, calling it a hasty and reactive attempt to justify the termination of criminal prosecutions against former NDC officials.
Dame claimed that the Mahama administration was trying to absolve its past appointees by abruptly discontinuing legal proceedings against them.
"I deem the press conference hurriedly assembled by the Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, as a knee-jerk reaction to genuine concerns raised by well-meaning Ghanaians on the attempt by the NDC government to whitewash the crimes of persons who served in the NDC government," he stated.
During a media briefing on February 14, the former Justice Minister asserted that the government’s moves were a calculated attempt to provide lasting immunity to its affiliates, preventing them from facing legal consequences for wrongdoing against the state.
"The President, through his Attorney-General, has in a spectacular fashion, become the clearing agent to indemnify their allies who have duly been put before the courts for commission of crimes," he added.
Godfred Dame argued that the Attorney-General’s stance weakens Ghana’s democratic and institutional foundations by implying that political allegiance takes precedence over accountability.
Nonetheless, he remained optimistic that the public would recognize the government's true intentions, affirming that criticism and resistance to such moves would persist.
"I am, however, reassured by the fact that Ghanaians are discerning enough to discover the illegitimate motives for the discontinuance of the cases in question," he said.
