Violence has erupted in Aboso, a farming village in the Fanteakwa North District of the Eastern Region, following a series of retaliatory attacks between local farmers and herdsmen.
The conflict, which has sparked widespread fear, has led to the destruction of properties and the killing of livestock.
The unrest stems from an alleged incident that occurred three months ago, where a herdsman was accused of raping a Christian woman.
Despite the suspect's arrest and ongoing investigation, local farmers have taken matters into their own hands, attacking herders in frustration over what they view as slow justice.
During the most recent attack, several homes belonging to the herders were set on fire, and six cattle were killed.
On Thursday, April 24, a 10-year-old boy was shot during the clashes and is now in critical condition at Begoro government hospital.
a victim of the violence, spoke with Citi News, providing insight into the chaos that has gripped the area. She confirmed that the retaliatory actions of the local farmers have only escalated the violence, including the shooting of the young boy.
“The locals avenged the death of the Christian woman by burning the homes of the Fulanis and shooting their cattle, to the extent of shooting a young boy who is at the Begoro hospital,” Belko explained.
Though police have intervened, Belko noted that fear remains widespread among the residents.
“The shootings occurred yesterday, Thursday, April 24, and we were able to call the police to visit the scene. The young boy is in a critical condition,” she added.
With tensions continuing to rise, Aboso's community remains caught in a cycle of violence, as both the farmers and herders await a resolution to the conflict.
