Popular Ghanaian musician and student leader, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, better known as Guru, has been officially inducted into the University of Ghana (UG) Governing Council.
The event, which took place at the university on April 25, 2025, also featured the formal commissioning of the newly restructured council by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
Guru, who is currently the President of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), takes on this new leadership role alongside his existing responsibilities.
Famous for chart-topping tracks like "Lapaz Toyota" and "Akwaaba," Guru has managed to combine a thriving music profession with passionate student advocacy, pushing for better welfare and academic reforms.
During the ceremony, Haruna Iddrisu called on the council to commit themselves to strengthening UG’s status as a top-tier academic institution.
“UG holds a critical place in Ghana’s development journey and must continue to lead in academic excellence, innovation, and institutional integrity,” the Minister stated.
Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, who was named as the new Council Chairperson, pledged her dedication to maintaining the university’s high standards.
The reconstituted council, made up of 19 distinguished members, features personalities like Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (Vice-Chancellor of UG), Dr. Alhassan Andani (former Managing Director of Stanbic Bank), and George Agyekum Donkor (Chairman of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID)).
With the fresh council taking office, attention is expected to shift to boosting research and postgraduate education, improving digital infrastructure for learning, upgrading student welfare services, and building stronger links between academia and industry.
