Nigerian media personality and filmmaker, Stephanie Coker Aderinokun, has opened up about a painful chapter in her life—revealing that she once considered taking her own life after a failed IVF attempt, despite spending nearly $40,000 on the treatment.
In a heartfelt interview on the “With Chude” podcast, Stephanie spoke about the emotional and financial stress she experienced while trying to become a mother.
She said the heartbreak of the second failed IVF procedure pushed her to a very dark place.
She explained that her first IVF cycle was successful, and she thought the journey to motherhood would be smooth. But the failure of the second round left her devastated.
“It was such an expensive decision — around $40,000 at the time. I got pregnant after the first cycle, but the second time it failed, and I remember thinking I just wanted to step in front of a moving car,” she shared.
Stephanie said she had travelled to Los Angeles for the procedure. But all her hopes were shattered when a nurse called her with the heartbreaking news.
“I felt completely useless. I couldn’t stop asking myself how I’d return to Lagos without a child,” she said. “The nurse called and said, ‘Hi Stephanie, I’m sorry to give you this bad news.’ At that moment, I couldn’t process it. I had spent all this money and time, and still had no baby.”
Her story mirrors the experiences of other Nigerian celebrities who have shared their fertility struggles on the same platform. Actress Ini Edo opted for surrogacy, while Nse Ikpe-Etim revealed she had a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with adenomyosis.
These personal stories highlight the silent battles many women go through in their journey to become mothers.
