Portugal over the weekend lifted the 2025 UEFA Nations League trophy, beating Spain 5-3 on penalties at the Allianz Arena on Sunday, June 8.
Portugal ended on a high note as Spain began the game with such energy that by the 21st minute, Martin Zubimendi scored an opener. Spain dominated in possession consistently.
However, barely four minutes after Spain's opener, Nuno Mendes reacted brilliantly, notching a thunderous equalizer at the 26th minute past Unai Simon of Spain to level the game.
Just before the first half ended, Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead in the 45th minute.
Spain's lead over the Seleção das Quinas was short-lived, as mounted pressure in the second half helped them create a chance in the box where Cristiano Ronaldo neatly tapped the ball into the net to make it 2-2.
The game still stood at 2-2 after 90 minutes of regular play plus 30 minutes of extra time; hence, it went into penalties, which began at approximately 21:45 GMT.
Of the five players of Spain, Mikel Merino, Álex Baena, and Isco found the back of the net; however, Alvaro Morata's miss (shot saved by Portuguese coach Diogo Costa) handed Portugal a win in a 5-3 score.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who was substituted in the 87th minute after feeling discomfort in his left leg, signaled for a substitution, and Gonçalo Ramos replaced him. He shed tears of joy after Ruben Neves slotted home the winning penalty.
Ronaldo fell to his knees, covered his face, and cried as emotions overwhelmed him.
Portugal's victory over Spain marked their second Nations League title. They won their first UEFA Nations League title in 2019.
Nuno Mendes was awarded the Man of the Match award for putting up an excellent performance, scoring, assisting, and limiting Lamine Yamal's effectiveness in the game.
