The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has officially placed a ban on the celebration of the Wa Yaa Dorm, Wa Yaa Klowem festival in Somanya, citing potential security threats and the possibility of violent confrontations with another long-standing traditional festival in the area.
The directive follows a recent security assessment that identified rising tensions between factions in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.
REGSEC indicated that the timing of the newly introduced Wa Yaa Dorm, Wa Yaa Klowem festival coincides with the annual Plau Kani festival, which is traditionally celebrated by the chiefs and people of Plau in Somanya.
Both festivals were scheduled to hold their grand durbars on Saturday, April 19, 2025, using the same procession route—a situation REGSEC says could lead to clashes between the two groups.
In light of the risks, the council, operating under the mandate of the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2020 (Act 1030), has directed that the Wa Yaa Dorm, Wa Yaa Klowem festival not be held on the proposed date.
The authorities explained that the measure is a proactive one, aimed at preventing disturbances and safeguarding the peace and security of the municipality.
According to REGSEC, “the decision prioritizes public safety and the overall security of the Yilo Krobo Municipality.”
Organizers of the Wa Yaa Dorm celebration have been urged to abide by the ban in the interest of preserving calm and avoiding any escalation of hostilities.
In a related move, REGSEC has instructed the police to maintain a strong presence during the Plau Kani festival and enforce law and order to protect residents and guests throughout the festivities.
