During Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad in March at the Accra Sports Stadium, a tragic incident claimed the life of a football fan.
The match, which saw the Black Stars secure a dominant 5-0 win to break a six-game streak without victory, was overshadowed by a deadly stampede outside the stadium.
Rita, a spectator who was seriously injured in the chaos, shared her account on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, May 7.
She described a terrifying scene as supporters struggled to gain entry, leading to a stampede marked by panic and aggression.
The clash, intended to reignite Ghana’s World Cup hopes, ended in heartbreak for some fans even as it brought joy on the pitch.
“People were pushing from behind, and those at the front had nowhere to go,” she said. “That’s when everything went wrong.”
Rita claimed the situation worsened when some security officers resorted to excessive force, assaulting several people amid the confusion.
She also disclosed that her brother, Lawrence—who had been visiting from Germany—was among those injured in the chaos. He sustained a critical injury during the stampede.
After receiving initial medical attention at Ridge Hospital in Accra, his condition required urgent intervention, prompting his transfer to Germany for emergency surgery.
“The doctors said it was urgent, so we had no choice but to send him back. Thankfully, the surgery went well, and he’s recovering now,” she added.
In response to the tragic incident, Charles Amofa, Communications Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has urged all fans who sustained injuries during the match to contact the NSA for support.
“We take this matter seriously and encourage affected individuals to reach out to us,” he stated.
