President John Dramani Mahama has urged both employers and employees to unite in building a fairer and more prosperous nation, as Ghana joined the world to celebrate Workers’ Day.
Sharing a message via his official Facebook page, Mahama acknowledged the dedication and hard work of Ghanaian workers, describing them as the backbone of the country’s development.
“Let us all, employers and employees, commit to fostering a spirit of collaboration, understanding, and mutual respect,” he stated. “
Let us work together to create a more prosperous and equitable Ghana, where every citizen can contribute their talents and skills to national development.”
Touching on this year’s Labour Day theme, “Striving for peace and stability to drive industrialization, trade, and decent work for social justice,” the president noted it underscores the urgent need for sound policies that can ensure fair wages, job security, and long-term economic growth.
Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing decent work, which he defined as including “fair wages, safe working conditions, opportunities for training and skills development, and the protection of workers’ rights.”
He pointed to recent initiatives like the National Apprenticeship Programme, Adwumawura, and the One Million Coders programme as strategic tools aimed at creating sustainable jobs and equipping young people with the skills required for a modern economy.
According to President Mahama, the government has been pursuing measures over the past four months to stabilise the economy and promote industrialisation. These include efforts to add value to raw materials, expand light manufacturing, and establish new trade links through initiatives such as the 24-hour economy policy.
While acknowledging existing challenges such as inflation, joblessness, and inadequate infrastructure, he assured Ghanaians that his team is determined to tackle them head-on.
“We are investing in education and skills training to equip our workforce with the necessary tools to succeed in a modern economy,” Mahama said, adding that infrastructure development—especially in roads and energy—remains a top priority.
He concluded by saluting the efforts of Ghanaian workers, reiterating that they remain the driving force behind the country’s progress. “You are the engine of our economy,” he said.
