Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged members of the judiciary to stand together and defend the integrity of their institution following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Speaking on Monday, May 5, at the Supreme Court, where the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allied parties submitted a petition as part of the ongoing “Save the Judiciary” protest, Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concern about what he views as a politically motivated attack on the judiciary.
“The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy. For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this ‘unfortunate’ attack, a flimsy pedestrian petition,” he told the crowd gathered.
He also took aim at the Council of State, blaming it for failing to protect the sanctity of the judiciary in its advisory role to government.
“The Council of State has failed the government, and we want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack,” he emphasized.
Afenyo-Markin warned judicial officers that remaining silent could set a dangerous precedent for the future.
“Maybe today it is Torkonoo, tomorrow it may be you. You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government,” he cautioned.
