Former Ballon d’Or winner and ex-Liberian president, George Weah, surprised many following his appearance in a friendly training match at La Bawaleshie Park in Accra on Monday, June 30, 2025.

The football session Mr. Weah attended was not part of any official tournament or competitive fixture.

It was one of the popular “Monday Stars” sessions, where retired and current Ghanaian footballers gather weekly to stay active and reconnect through the game.

His presence at the usual fitness exercise drew a throng of excited onlookers ready to be dazzled by the only African player who has won a Ballon d'Or.

Weah, who starred for top European clubs like AC Milan, PSG, and Chelsea among other five clubs during his playing days, showed a brilliant and electrifying display during his days as a professional footballer.As usual, he didn't disappoint, thrilling his fans as he dribbled past opponents and linked up with other players on the dusty field.

Though he couldn't notch any goal, he came close to scoring what would have been a memorable goal, but his effort was cleared off the line.

Following the match, he posed with some fans for photos and also spent time interacting with fans.

Also, present at Monday's game were Ghanaian legends like Samuel Osei Kuffour, Agyeman Badu, and John Mensah.

The game has since gone viral on social media, with many praising the Liberian icon for staying close to the grassroots game and inspiring young footballers in Ghana and beyond.

George Weah served as Liberia’s president from 2018 until 2024 but has always stayed connected to the sport that made him a global star.

The former Liberian president won the Ballon d’Or in 1995, making him the first and only African to win the award. Also, in 1989, 1994, 1995,Mr Weah won thrice , the African Footballer of the Year.

His 75 caps, 18 goals led the Liberia National Team to qualify twice for AFCON.
