Through an intelligence-led operation, the Ghana Police thwarted a planned robbery by a group of three on June 26 along the Accra–Akuapem–Mamfe road.
The suspects attempted to steal a gold consignment valued at over GHC 1.3 million.
The gold dealer was rescued safely, and the gold, weighing approximately 1.2 kilograms was also secured.
The suspects are identified as Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif and Kenneth Khartey.
The Special Support Unit (SSU) of the Ghana Police Service at the National Headquarters commenced the operation on Wednesday, June 25.
This follows indications that a gold dealer’s driver and a man posing as his bodyguard had conspired to rob the dealer during a scheduled gold delivery the following day.
Kenneth Khartey was arrested near Akuapem–Mamfe while riding a motorbike and trailing a Land Cruiser transporting the gold consignment.
Later that same day, suspects Adams Zibo and Massawud Yussif were arrested at East Legon in an unregistered blue Hyundai vehicle.
Investigations established that the two suspects procured firearms, motorbikes and a getaway vehicle for the robbery and were responsible for the sale of the gold after the robbery.
All three suspects are in custody, assisting the investigation and will be put before court.
